A scholar of Japanese literature and Japanese language education. Born into the Yose family in Takayama, Gifu Prefecture, he was adopted by his relative, Unrin Kakiuchi (1846-1919). After graduating from the Faculty of Letters of the Imperial University of Tokyo, he became a professor at Tokyo Women's Higher Normal School (now Ochanomizu University), before going on to become a professor at Tokyo Higher Normal School (later Tokyo University of Literature and Science), and also served as a lecturer at Tokyo University of Literature and Science (now University of Tsukuba). Referring to Western academic theories, he reexamined the theories of traditional scholars of Japanese language and literature, and devoted himself to pioneering research methods for the Japanese language and Japanese literature. His hermeneutics and figurative theory (viewing linguistic expression as a unified entity of content and form) had a wide impact not only on Japanese literature research, but also on Japanese language education. His books include "The Power of the Japanese Language" (1922), "Criticism and Introspection of Japanese Language Professors" (1927), and "Speaking of Language Figurativeness" (1940).
