A resource whose available quantity is limited relative to needs. Resources whose available quantity is not limited relative to needs and that are not scarce are not the subject of economics, no matter how useful or effective they may be; however scarce resources are the subject of economics. Research into mechanisms for efficiently allocating scarce resources to produce goods and services has long been a research topic in economics.
