Resources whose available quantity is not limited relative to needs and that are not scarce are not the subject of economics, no matter how useful or effective they may be; however scarce resources are the subject of economics. Research into mechanisms for efficiently allocating scarce resources to produce goods and services has long been a research topic in economics.
