A chemical fertilizer company. Noguchi Tsune (1873-1944) founded the electric power company Sogi Denki in 1906 and Japan Carbide Shokai in 1908. In the same year, the two companies merged to form Nippon Chisso Fertilizer. As the core company of the Nitchitsu Group, it manufactured calcium nitrate and ammonium sulfate. In 1950, under the Business Reconstruction and Adjustment Act, Shin-Nippon Chisso Fertilizer was established as a second company, and in 1965 it adopted its current name and expanded into the petrochemical business. The company was held responsible for Minamata disease. It is still recording huge accumulated losses due to the payment of compensation to Minamata disease victims. Since the 1970s, it has developed high technological capabilities, including liquid crystal and polyolefin composite fibers. Head office in Tokyo, factories in Minamata, Moriyama, Tobata, and others. 化学肥料会社。野口遵(したがう)〔1873-1944〕が1906年に電力会社の曾木電気，1908年に日本カーバイド商会を設立，同年，両者が合併して日本窒素肥料が発足。日窒(にっちつ)コンツェルンの中心会社として石灰窒素，硫安を製造。1950年企業再建整備法により第二会社として新日本窒素肥料発足，1965年現社名となり，石油化学事業にも進出。水俣病の原因企業として責任を問われた。水俣病被害者への補償金等の支払いで，現在でも巨額の累積損失を計上している。1970年代以降，液晶やポリオレフィン複合繊維を開発するなど，技術力は高い。本社東京，工場水俣，守山，戸畑ほか。2011年資本金78億円，2011年３月期売上高2459億円。→化学工業
