felting

Japanese: felting
felting

…Wool fiber masses and yarns are mechanically acted upon in water to change into a dense structure, just as with woven fabrics. This phenomenon is called felting. For hard animal fibers with poor felting properties, such as rabbit hair, a preliminary treatment called carrotting (named for the carrot-like color that this treatment gives the fibers) is used to soften the fibers and increase their felting properties, and then the fibers are felted to make felt.
