...The activities of Yamabushi became more active after the Northern and Southern Courts period, and Shugendo became more organized during the Muromachi period. However, the Yamabushi who were based in various mountains and belonged to temples of various Buddhist sects came to be connected with En no Gyoja as their founder. Many books about En no Gyoja, including "En no Gyoja's Secret Record of the En's Final Extent," "En no Kimi no Gyosho-ki," "En no Gyoja Kou Shiki," and "En no Gyoja Honki," were created as Shugendo texts, and in 1799 (Kansei 11), the Imperial Court bestowed upon En no Gyoja the posthumous title of Shinben Daibosatsu. There are many images and sculptures of En no Gyoja, but he is usually depicted wearing a monk's robe and a kesa, with a long beard, holding a shakujo in his hand, wearing high wooden clogs, sitting on a rock, and accompanied by a front demon holding an axe and a back demon holding a stick. …

…南北朝時代を経て山伏の活動は一段とさかんになり，室町時代には修験道の組織化が進んだが，各地の山々に割拠し，仏教各宗の寺院に属していた山伏たちは，役行者を開祖としてつながりを持つようになった。《役行者顚末秘蔵記》《役君形生記（えんくんぎようしようき）》《役行者講私記》《役行者本記》をはじめ，役行者に関する数々の書が，修験道の教典として作られ，1799年(寛政11)には，朝廷から役行者に対して神変大菩薩という諡号（しごう）が贈られた。役行者の画像や彫刻は数多く作られたが，その姿は，僧衣に袈裟をまとい，長いひげをたくわえ，手には錫杖を持ち，高下駄をはいて岩に腰かけ，斧を持つ前鬼（ぜんき）と棒を持つ後鬼（ごき）を従えているのが一般である。…
