Asōpos (English spelling)

…After his death, he was cast into hell and ordered to push a boulder to the top of a mountain, but the boulder would always roll back down whenever he reached the top, so he would endure this futile toil forever. This famous story was already told in Homer's epic poem, the Odyssey, but later myth-makers explained the reason for Sisyphus' punishment as being because he had revealed that Zeus had kidnapped the daughter of the river god Asopos, incurring Zeus' wrath and sending him to the underworld, but he had managed to deceive Hades, the king of the underworld, and return to earth to live a long life. Some writers from the 4th century BC onwards also claimed that Sisyphus was Odysseus' true father. …
