British female dancer. Her real name was Lillian Alicia Marks. She was Britain's first world-famous ballerina, and she adopted a Russian-sounding name. She was born in London, where she studied under Cecchetti and others. At the age of 14, she joined the Ballets Russes, and danced the lead role in Balanchine's The Nightingale (1926). She subsequently danced with the first British ballet company, the Camargo Society (1931), the Rambert Ballet, and the Big Wells Ballet (later the Royal Ballet), contributing to the development of British ballet. In 1935, together with Dolin, she founded the Markova-Dolin Ballet (1935-1938, 1945), and in 1950, she founded the London Festival Ballet. Her greatest hit was Giselle, and she wrote Giselle and I (1960).
