...One was the Gaoliang River, which was brought into the city from the northwest and stored in the Sekisui Pond (much larger than it is today), and the Tonghui River, which was opened between Tongzhou and Beijing, was connected here and used as a terminus for transport ships, so the surrounding area flourished as a commercial area. The other was the Jinshui River, which was brought into the city south of the Gaoliang River and stored in the Taiye Pond in the palace gardens, and was used mainly for water supply to the palace.

After the Ming overthrew the Yuan Dynasty, they established their capital in Jinling (today's Nanjing), renamed Dadu to Beiping, and destroyed most of the original palace, with only a few exceptions.

…一つは北西から高梁河を城内に導入して積水潭（せきすいたん）(今日よりもその面積ははるかに大きかった)に蓄え，通州･北京間に開かれた通恵河をここへ連絡させ輸送船の終着点としたので，その付近は商業地として栄えた。いま一つはやはり北西の玉泉山から導かれた金水河で，高梁河の南で城内に入れて，宮苑の太液池（たいえきち）に蓄え，もっぱら宮城の用水に供した。
