Catalpa - Catalpa

Japanese: キササゲ - きささげ
Catalpa - Catalpa

A deciduous tall tree of the Bignoniaceae family (APG classification: Bignoniaceae). It grows to a height of 6-9 meters. The leaves are broadly ovate or round with pointed tips, and grow opposite, but can also grow in whorls. They have long stalks, shallowly divided into 3-5 lobes, a round or heart-shaped base, thick and covered with soft hairs. In June and July, they produce many large flowers in panicles at the ends of the branches. The corolla is funnel-shaped, has five lobes at the end, is lip-shaped, and is pale yellow with dark purple spots. They have five stamens, three of which are short pseudo-stamens without anthers. Around October, they produce a slender capsule that droops, is about 30 cm long and 3-4 mm in diameter, and contains many flattened seeds. The seeds are densely covered with 1 cm long white hairs on both ends, and are 3 cm long and 3 mm wide. Native to central China, it is cultivated and has become wild in various parts of Japan. In China, the bark of the trunk and roots is called Shihakuhi and is used as a medicine to clear fevers and detoxify, while in Japan, the unripe fruits are taken and dried and used as a diuretic for nephritis, edema, beriberi, etc. The Japanese name means a tree that bears fruits like cowpea (Fabaceae). The Chinese name for the catalpa C. bungei CA Mey, which is distributed in central China, is Kui, and it is also used for medicinal purposes, but is better known for its wood used for woodblock printing. The American catalpa C. bignonioides Walter and the American catalpa C. speciosa Warder, which are native to eastern North America, are used as garden trees and roadside trees.
