Mount Kuju

Japanese: 久住山 - くじゅうさん
Mount Kuju

A mountain in the mid-west of Oita Prefecture. It is one of the peaks of the Kuju volcanic group, and has an altitude of 1,787 meters. It is a bell-shaped volcano (troide) of hornblende andesite, and there are crater remains such as Oike and Karaike near the summit, and the view from the summit of Mt. Aso and Mt. Sobo is wonderful. It has also been called Mt. Kutami since ancient times, and in the Manyoshu it is written, "When the clouds that dwell on Mt. Kutami fade away, I will not long for your eyes." At an altitude of 1,300 meters in the valley at the foot of Mt. Mimata, there is Hokkein Onsen. It takes just over three hours on foot from the south trailhead, and around two hours on foot from Handa Plateau Chojabaru and Makinoto Pass along the Yamanami Highway to reach the summit.
