Founded in 1931 as a spin-off of the tire division of a rubber processing company established in Kurume by Shojiro Ishibashi. One of the world's three largest tire manufacturers, the company was formerly known as Bridgestone Tire, but changed its name to the current one in 1984. In 1988, the company acquired Firestone, the second largest tire manufacturer in the United States, and made it a subsidiary. The company also produces industrial and household rubber products and motorcycles, and is headquartered in Tokyo. It has factories in Kurume, Kodaira, Yokohama, etc. It produces locally in 25 countries around the world, including the United States, Thailand, and India. In 2006, overseas sales reached 75%. The company also has a track record in various motor sports, including F1 racing. Capital in 2011 was 126.3 billion yen, and sales for the fiscal year ending December 2011 were 3.243 trillion yen. Sales breakdown (%): tires 84, diversified products 16. Overseas sales ratio 77%.
