Fishing boat insurance

Japanese:
Fishing boat insurance

This is insurance to compensate fishing boats for damages caused by perils at sea. It was established by the Fishing Boat Insurance Act enacted in 1937 (Showa 12), and is currently operated under the Fishing Boat Damage Compensation Act enacted in 1952 (Showa 27). The system is that fishing boat insurance associations established under the said act underwrite insurance, and the government reinsures it. There are industry associations that cover only fishing boats engaged in specific fisheries, and regional associations that cover prefectures. There are two types of fishing boat insurance: ordinary insurance and special insurance that compensates for damages caused by war, upheaval, and similar accidents. There are ordinary insurance, which compensates for damages caused by ordinary accidents at sea, and maturity insurance, which combines ordinary insurance and maturity insurance, which pays insurance money at maturity, and covers fishing boats with a gross tonnage of less than 1,000 tons. Insurance underwritten by fishing boat insurance associations is automatically subject to government reinsurance. The reinsurance premium rate is the pure insurance premium rate, and the additional insurance premium is fully borne by the national treasury.
