Virtual image

Japanese:
Virtual image

An image in which an object (or its image) appears to be at a certain location, even though light rays do not actually converge at that location. This term is used in contrast to a real image, in which light rays actually intersect at the image point. Generally, we see objects because light rays emitted from the object enter our eyes and create an image of the object on our retina. However, even if an object does not actually exist, if light rays enter our eyes in the same state as when the object exists, we can see the non-existent object. However, it is incorrect to think of this as a hallucination or illusion. This is because, in principle, there is no way to distinguish between light rays emitted from a real object and light rays emitted from a virtual image. The face we see in a mirror every day, and the car following us in the rearview mirror, are examples of virtual images.
