A winch that winds a wire rope or chain around a cylindrical drum, rotates the drum to pull the wires and move heavy objects, or lifts them via a pulley. Smaller winches are called hand-wound winches, and are operated by turning a crank handle by hand and using gears to drive the drum. They are equipped with a brake to prevent the load from falling even if the crank is released. Larger winches are powered by an internal combustion engine or electric motor. There is a clutch between the gear and the drum, which allows the power from the prime mover to be transmitted or cut off to the drum. To hold the load, the clutch is released and the brake is applied. To lower the load, the brake is released. Winches are classified as single-drum, double-drum, or multi-drum winches depending on the number of drums. They are widely used for transporting heavy objects in factories, civil engineering, mining, and ships.
