A mountain range in the north-central part of the African continent, south of the Sahara Desert. It straddles the borders of Chad, Niger, and Libya, but most of it lies in northwestern Chad. It is the highest mountain range in the Sahara Desert, with the highest point being Mount Emixi (3,415 m). It is based on crystalline rocks covered by Paleozoic sandstone, and in places extrusive rocks from the volcanic period are exposed. Three deep dry valleys run through it, indicating that the climate was humid until around 5000 BC. It is inhabited by nomadic peoples.
