A coffin made of layers of coarse cloth hardened with lacquer. "Ka" means to overlap, and "tsu" means linen. The kazu coffin at Abuyama Tomb in Nasawara, Takatsuki City, Osaka Prefecture, is 1.97m long, 62cm wide, and 51cm high, and is made of more than 20 layers of coarse cloth, with black lacquer on the outside and vermilion lacquer on the inside. The one at Kengyoshizuka Tomb in Nara Prefecture is a fragment, but it is made of 35 layers of linen cloth, with black lacquer on the outside and vermilion lacquer on the inside. There are also some coffins where only the kazu technique is seen, such as the lining of two stone coffins at Shobuike Tomb in Kashihara City, Nara Prefecture. It is thought that kazu coffins were first used in Japan around the second half of the 7th century, but they were already used in China during the Han dynasty, and a kazu coffin was discovered at the Luxiang Tomb in Guchengbao, Yanggao County, Shanxi Province.
