1791‐1865 A patriot and politician in the Greek War of Liberation. Born a Phanariot. When the revolution broke out, he rushed to Missolonghi, where he became chairman of the revolution committee and was later elected the first president of the Greek Republic at the first National Assembly in Epidaurus. He later served as ambassador to Europe and prime minister (in office 1843-44, 1853). He was a leader of the pro-British faction.
