…In response to this, a group of experts who gathered at the Paris World's Fair in 1967 issued a statement calling for the internationalization of the metric system, and at the International Geodesy Congress in 1967, a resolution was passed calling for the creation of a common length standard due to the existence of systematic errors in European triangulation surveys. In response to this, the Russian Academy of Sciences also requested the creation of an international metric standard. In response to these requests, the French government convened the International Meter Committee in 1969. This committee met in 1970, and after a hiatus due to the Franco-Prussian War, resumed in 1972.
