Udaikanba - Udaikanba

A deciduous tall tree of the Betulaceae family (APG classification: Betulaceae), it can reach a height of 30 meters. The bark is grayish white with horizontally elongated lenticels. The twigs are dark reddish brown and shiny. The leaves are alternate on the long branches and two on each of the short branches. They are large, ovate, 8-15 cm long, heart-shaped at the base, and have sawtooth edges. It is monoecious, and the male inflorescences appear at the ends of the long branches in the previous autumn and open and droop in early spring. The female inflorescences are three or four at the ends of the short branches. The nuts are small and have broad wings. It grows in fertile and moist soil on mountain valleys and slopes, often forming pure forests. It is distributed in Honshu, Hokkaido, and the Chubu region northward. The wood is dense and beautiful, and is widely used for furniture, interior building materials, flooring, etc. The name is said to be an abbreviation of Utaimatsukanba (cormorant torches), which were used for torches during cormorant fishing. It is also called Saihadakamba.

カバノキ科（APG分類：カバノキ科）の落葉高木で、高さ30メートルにも達する大木。樹皮は灰白色で横長の皮目がある。小枝は暗赤褐色で光沢がある。葉は長枝では互生し、短枝では2枚ずつつき、卵形で大きく、8～15センチメートルあり、基部は心臓形で、縁(へり)には鋸歯(きょし)がある。雌雄同株で、雄花序は前年の秋から長枝の先に現れ、早春に開いて下垂する。雌花序は短枝の先に3、4個つく。堅果は小さく、広い翼がある。山地の谷筋や斜面の肥沃(ひよく)で適潤な地に生え、しばしば純林をつくる。中部地方以北の本州、北海道に分布する。材は緻密(ちみつ)で美しく、家具、建築内装材、床板材など広く用いる。名は鵜飼(うかい)のときの松明(たいまつ)に使ったので鵜松明樺(うたいまつかんば)の略であるという。サイハダカンバともいう。
