...Famous examples of government paper money in the West include the Assignat banknotes from the French Revolution (1789-96), the Greenbacks banknotes from the American Civil War (1862-66), and the British currency notes from World War I (1914-28). In Japan, representative examples include the feudal domain banknotes from the Edo period, the Dajokan banknotes, the Ministry of Civil Affairs banknotes, and the Kaitakushi securities issued by the Meiji Restoration government. Relatively recent examples include the small denomination banknotes issued during the Pacific War to deal with the shortage of subsidy currency, and the military notes issued by the military to pay for military expenses in occupied territories. Incidentally, national banknotes from the early Meiji period were called banknotes, but were in fact bank notes.
