Milk has been consumed by humans since ancient times, and it is said to have already become an important food in India about 6,000 years ago. It is also said that Genghis Khan's soldiers carried dried milk as food. In Japan, around the time of the Taika Reforms, Fukutsune (also called Zenna) presented milk to Emperor Kotoku, who gave Zenna the surname "Wayaku Tsushinshu" (Japanese medicine envoy) and the position of "Chief Milk Officer."
