Kabuki actor. There were four generations by the end of the Edo period, but details are unknown. Only the first is well known. The first (1698-1769, Genroku 11-Meiwa 6) was born in Kyoto. He made his debut at the Osaka Takeda Theater. In 1732 (Kyoho 17), he went to Edo, and in 1734 became a doukegata (a Hokkaido actor). From then on, he gained popularity for his acting and distinctive looks, and was praised as the best doukegata in the three major cities. He also ran a Kanoko mochi shop in Edo's Ningyocho district, which was also well-received and became the subject of many plays.
