H. - Iebel

…Emperor Hadrian was a brilliant architect in his own right and is regarded as the primary architect of such buildings as the Pantheon in Rome, the Temple of Venus and Rome, and Hadrian's Villa (Villa Adriana) at Tivoli.
[Medieval architects]
The architects who built medieval monasteries and cathedrals in the West were by no means unknown. There are many known architects and master masons, including Pierre de Montereau (?-1267), architect of the Abbey Church of Saint-Denis and Notre-Dame de Paris, and Henry Yevele (?-1400), architect of Westminster Abbey in London and the nave of Canterbury Cathedral. However, as in ancient times, very little is known about the backgrounds and personalities of the architects themselves. However, their general character has been inherited from ancient times, and they are thought to have traveled from place to place to build churches, castles, and city walls, and to have been employed as military engineers in times of war.
