A city in the southeastern part of Fukushima Prefecture. It was established in 1966 by the merger of five cities, Taira, Nakoso, Joban, Uchigo, and Iwaki, and four towns and five villages. Facing the Pacific Ocean, most of it is the Abukuma Plateau, with flat land in the Natsui River and Same River basins. The Joban Line and Ban'etsu East Line run through the city, and the Joban Expressway and Ban'etsu Expressway branch off from it. It once prospered due to the Joban coalfields, but the mines closed completely in 1976. It was designated a new industrial city in 1964, and industries such as chemicals, electrical equipment, food, lumber and wood products are carried out in the city, forming the Joban Industrial Region. In terms of manufactured goods shipments, it was ranked first in the prefecture with 1.371 trillion yen (2003), and second only to Sendai City in the Tohoku region. In rural areas, it produces a lot of tobacco leaves and lumber. Onahama, the center of the former Iwaki City, developed as a rice and coal shipping port, and is home to large chemical plants producing fertilizer, salt, and pharmaceuticals, as well as fishery processing plants. Along with Ena to the east, it is also a base for deep-sea fishing, and port development is underway. Iwaki Yumoto Onsen is home to hot springs, which draw water from a former coal mine. The city suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 1,232.02 km2 . 342,249 people (2010). →Related Articles Iwakidaira Domain | Jangara Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
