Anu - Anu (English spelling)

An, which means "heaven" in Sumerian and is also the name of a heavenly god, was adopted into Akkadian and became a Semitic god, also known as Anum in ancient times. The Semitic heavenly god was El, but Anu was identified with him or was revered as the supreme god in place of El. The Sumerian heavenly god An was enshrined in E-an-na (Temple of An) in Uruk in central Mesopotamia, and worship of Anu continued from this center until the later Greek Seleucid dynasty. The Sumerian heavenly god An had the earth god Ki as its counterpart, but Anu's counterpart was Antum, and the goddess Ishtar is said to be the daughter of Anu and Antum.

シュメール語で「天」を意味し、同時に天神の名でもあるアンがアッカド語に取り入れられ、セム人の神となったもので、古くはアヌムともよばれた。セム人の天神としてはエルがいたが、アヌはこれと同一視され、あるいはこれにとってかわる最高神として尊崇された。シュメールの天神アンは、中部メソポタミアのウルクのエ・アン・ナ（アン神殿）に祀(まつ)られていたが、ここを中心にアヌ神崇拝はずっと後代のギリシア系セレウコス朝まで続いた。シュメールの天神アンには対偶神として地神キがいたが、これに対してアヌの対偶神はアントゥムであり、女神イシュタルはアヌとアントゥムの娘とされる。
