Lacquer bark - Shippi

A type of lacquerwork technique. Deer or cowhide is moistened and molded into the desired shape of the vessel, then dried and lacquered to set it in place. It is thin, light, and durable. It has been practiced since the Asuka period, and relics from the Nara period are found in Shosoin, Horyuji Temple, Shitennoji Temple, and other places. 漆工技法の一種。しかや牛の皮を湿らせて，希望する器物の形に成形し，乾燥後に漆を塗って固定させたもの。薄手で軽くじょうぶである。飛鳥時代から行われ，奈良時代の遺品が正倉院，法隆寺，四天王寺などにある。
