Kipsigis people - Kipsigis people (English spelling)

Japanese: キプシギス族 - キプシギスぞく（英語表記）Kipsigis; Kipsikis

An ethnic group living in southwestern Kenya. Their language belongs to the Kalenjin group of Para-Nile languages. They depend mainly on cattle ranching and agriculture, and currently produce corn instead of millet and sorghum. Their historical traditions make it clear that they were originally cattle herders, and cattle still play an important role in their rituals. Both men and women are circumcised, and warrior groups made up of circumcised men played an important role in defense and in fighting raids against neighboring peoples, but this function was lost under British colonial policy from the early 20th century. ケニア南西部に住む一民族。言語はパラ＝ナイル語系のカレンジン語群に属する。主として牛牧と農業に依存し，ひえ，もろこしに代って現在はとうもろこしの生産が中心となっている。元来は牛牧民であったことが彼らの歴史伝承から明らかであり，牛は儀礼のなかで現在も重要な役割を与えられている。男女ともに割礼を受け，割礼後の男子で構成された戦士集団は防衛と隣接民族との略奪戦に大きな役割を果していたが，20世紀初頭以後のイギリス植民地政策のもとでその機能も失われた。 (→ナイロ＝ハム語系諸族 )
