Functional harmonic tonality

...In the broad sense, it refers to the phenomenon in which melodies and harmonies used in music are subordinated to one note (the tonic note) as the center, and in the narrow sense, it means functional harmonic tonality, which was the central term in European art music of the 18th and 19th centuries. Therefore, in the broad sense, folk songs based on pentatonic and other special scales and music based on church modes also have tonality if they have a central tone, but in this case, it is called modality to distinguish it from tonality in the narrow sense.
