Boone, Daniel
Born November 2, 1734 in Berks, Pennsylvania.
Died: September 26, 1820. St. Charles, Missouri. American frontier pioneer. Moved to North Carolina in 1750, explored Kentucky in 1767 and 1769-1771. Attempt to emigrate to Kentucky with several families in 1773, but was attacked by Cherokee Indians, and two of his sons were killed, forcing him to abandon the plan. In 1875, hired by the Transylvania Company, which aimed to establish the 14th colony, he again led immigrants to Kentucky, repelling Indian attacks and building a fort in present-day Boonesborough, establishing a foothold for whites to advance into Kentucky. In 1880, his land ownership was ruled invalid, and he moved to West Virginia, before moving back to present-day Missouri in 1899. In 1814, he was granted land ownership in the area by the Congress. His name became known worldwide after the English poet G. Byron wrote a song about him in 1823.
