A type of life insurance. It is classified based on the method of payment of insurance money. Lump sum insurance is when insurance money is paid as a lump sum, while pension insurance is when insurance money is paid in installments over a certain period of time. Pension insurance is usually abbreviated to "pension," but all modern pensions are based on insurance technology and actuarial science. Pensions are a system to achieve economic security for the rest of one's life, especially after reaching old age and retiring or leaving the front line. There are personal pensions that individuals voluntarily join, corporate pensions that companies provide to their retirees using insurance companies, and pensions as social security and social insurance that the state provides to stabilize the lives of its citizens in old age. The first two are called private pension insurance, and the latter is called public pension insurance. Public pension insurance in Japan is for employees, and is composed of the Employee's Pension Insurance, Seamen's Insurance, National Civil Service Mutual Aid Association, and various other mutual aid associations organized mainly in the workplace, as well as the National Pension and Farmers' Pension for the general public, and there is a large disparity in burdens and benefits between the systems.

生命保険の一種。保険金の給付方法に基づく分類で，保険金が一時金として給付されるものを一時金保険というのに対して，保険金が一定期間にわたって分割して給付されるものを年金保険という。年金保険は通常「年金」と略称されるが，現代的年金はいずれも保険技術，保険数理に基礎をおいている。年金は特に老齢に達して退職あるいは第一線を退いた以後の余生の経済的保障を達成するための仕組みで，個人が任意，自発的に加入する個人年金，企業がその退職者を対象として保険会社などを利用して行う企業年金，国家が国民の老後の生活安定のために実施する社会保障，社会保険としての年金があり，前2者を私的年金保険，後者を公的年金保険という。日本における公的年金保険は被用者を対象にし，職域を中心に組織された厚生年金保険，船員保険，国家公務員共済組合，その他各種共済組合などと，一般国民を対象とした国民年金，農業者年金によって制度が構成されていて，制度間における負担と給付の格差が大きい。
