...There is also a famous myth about the "Descent of the Ganges," in which the goddess Ganga descended from heaven at the request of King Bhagiratha, her torrent supported by the hair of the god Shiva, who was performing penance on Mount Kailasa, then split into several parts and reached the earth, where she purified the ashes of King Sagara's sons and led them to heaven. Mount Arbuda in central India (now called Mount Abu, a holy place for Jainism) has long been called the "son of the Himalayas," and is said to have been sent down to this barren land by the Himalayan mountain god. [Scope, division]
The Himalayas stretch from the Indus River valley in the west to the great bend of the Brahmaputra River in the east, stretching about 2,400 km from east to west and 200 to 300 km north to south.
