A haiku poet of the early Edo period. Tsuboi. A rice wholesaler in Nagoya. In the winter of 1684 (Jokyo 1), he welcomed Basho to Nagoya during his travels to write "Nozarashi Kiko" (Traveling in the Wilderness), and became his disciple. At that time, Basho and Nomizu, Kakei, Jugo, Uritsu, and Shohei gathered around him and composed the "Fuyu no Hi" (Five Poets) (six additional lines). In 1685, he was banished from Nagoya for selling empty rice and retired to Hobi in Mikawa Province (Hobi, Tahara City, Aichi Prefecture). In 1687, while writing "Oi no Kobumi," Basho made the effort to visit the area, traveling from Yoshino and Koya to Suma and Akashi. He died in Hobi, but his age at death is unknown. Shiko wrote, "Mori was the beloved younger brother of the late old man, and it is regrettable that he had such an unfortunate and short life" (Honsho Bunkan). He was around 35 or 36 years old.
