A diffuse nebula in the constellation Sagittarius. It is so named because of the black bands that split the large nebula, which is 30 arcminutes in size, into three parts. The nebula is about 1000 parsecs away and spans 10 parsecs. A star was born in the center of a large gas cloud, and the gas that did not become a star glows due to the ultraviolet rays of that star. The cold, dense parts of the gas become dark nebulae, creating the three black bands. [Shuzo Isobe May 19, 2015] [Reference item] | |A diffuse nebula in Sagittarius. NGC6514 (M20).
