homologous chromosomes

...somatic cells contain pairs of chromosomes that have the same shape and alleles, originating from each parent (with the exception of sex chromosomes). These are called homologous chromosomes. Identifying the homologous chromosomes in the somatic cells of a species and arranging them according to the order of chromosome shape and size is called the karyotype of that species, and determining the karyotype in this way is called karyotype analysis.
