Jonah (English: yônāh) Hebrew

A prophet active during the reign of King Jeroboam II of the Northern Kingdom of Israel (787-747 BC). According to the Book of Jonah in the Old Testament, Jonah, the son of Amittai, was commanded by God Yahweh to prophesy the destruction of the Assyrian city of Nineveh, but to avoid this mission, he set sail from the port of Joppa and fled to the sea. However, he was caught in a storm and swallowed by a large fish, which spit him out on land, so he finally obeyed God's command and prophesied in Nineveh. This saved the city of Nineveh from destruction.

北王国イスラエルの王ヤラベアム2世の治世（前787～前747）に活動した預言者。『旧約聖書』の「ヨナ書」によれば、アミッタイの子ヨナは、アッシリアの都ニネベ滅亡の預言を神ヤーウェに命じられたが、その使命を回避すべくヨッパの港から船出して海に逃れた。しかし暴風にあって大魚に飲み込まれ、陸に吐き出されたので、ついに神命に従い、ニネベで預言する。これによってニネベの町は滅びを免れた。
