A Confucian scholar (ancient scholar) in the late Edo and early Meiji periods. His given name was Hei and his pen name was Chuhei. He was the son of Yasui Soshu, a Confucian scholar from the Obi domain in Hyuga. At the age of 26, he entered Shoheizaka Academy and studied under Matsuzaki Kodo. He served as an assistant professor at the Obi domain school for a time, but later became a professor at Shoheizaka Academy. He respected the ancient commentaries of the Han and Tang dynasties, and enjoyed Qing dynasty historical research. When Perry and then Putyatin arrived in 1853, he wrote Private Discussions on Kaibō (Private Discussions on the Defense of the Sea) in which he explained current affairs.
