The area in the north of the Iberian Peninsula, stretching from the western end of the Pyrenees to the eastern Cantabrian Mountains. It includes the three Spanish provinces (Álava, Guipúzcoa, and Biscay) that face the Bay of Biscay, the region of Navarre, and part of the French department of Bas-Pyrénées. Basque is the French name, and is called Vasco in Spanish and Euskadi in Vasco. Agriculture, forestry, and dairy farming are practiced here. Iron ore is produced here. It is one of the leading industrial areas in Spain, and finance and commerce are also active. The Basque people maintained their independence under ancient Roman rule, and resisted invasions by the Visigoths and the Franks. The Basque people's desire for independence led to the formation of the Basque National Party (PNV, founded in 1895) and the Basque Homeland and Freedom (ETA, founded in 1959), and their movement led to autonomy in 1979. There is also a movement to promote the Basque language, which was banned under the Franco regime.

イベリア半島北部，ピレネー山脈の西端からカンタブリア山脈東部に及ぶ地域。ビスケー湾に面するスペイン側３県（アラバ，ギプスコア，ビスカヤ）とナバラ地方，フランスのバス・ピレネー県の一部を含む。Basqueはフランス語の呼称で，スペイン語ではバスコVasco，バスコ語ではエウスカディEuskadi。農林業，酪農が行われる。鉄鉱を産出。スペイン有数の工業地帯で金融・商業も盛ん。バスク人は古代ローマの支配下でも実質上は独立を保ち，西ゴート，フランクの侵入にも抵抗した。バスクの独立志向はバスク国民党（PNV，1895年創設）やバスク祖国と自由（ETA，1959年創設）の結成につながり，その運動によって1979年自治が認められた。フランコ体制下に使用を禁止されたバスク語を普及する運動もなされている。
