…His first collection of poems, Stances et poèmes (1865), was recognized and he began to contribute to the philosophical magazines, but his poems, such as Les epreuves (1866) and Les solitudes (1869), which deal with inner contemplation, are essentially different from the philosophical poems. He gradually became more philosophical, and created long philosophical poems such as La justice (1878) and Le bonheur (1888). He became a member of the Académie Française in 1881 and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1901. …
