It is a member of the Felidae family of the Carnivora order of the Mammalia class. It is found in the Andean highlands of northern Chile, southern Peru, southwestern Bolivia, and northwestern Argentina, living on rocky ground at around 5,000 meters above sea level. Its body length is 70-75 cm, and its tail length is around 45 cm. Its body is not shiny orange-brown like other cats, but is gray-brown and whitish with orange-brown markings and a yellowish-brown ring on its tail. Its fur is thick and smooth like velvet. Little is known about its habits, and it is known to prey on rodents such as chinchillas and birds that live in high mountains. It is difficult to raise, and the only records of one surviving for a year and several months have been recorded.
