Wise Thought - Shokenshisou

Japanese: 尚賢思想 - しょうけんしそう

This is an assertion that talented people should be respected, and in China this was strongly advocated in the appointment of officials. In other words, it is the idea of promoting people according to their talent, as opposed to the hereditary system. This idea is most strongly advocated in "Mozi" and "The Tale of Gongyang." "Mozi" mainly preaches the love between brothers, fathers and sons, and rulers, but this is based on the liberation of the weak from the hereditary and clan systems. From the same foundation comes the assertion that the door to promotion to government office should be opened to commoners and slaves according to their talent.

才能ある者を尊崇するという主張であるが，中国ではこれが官吏の登用において強く唱えられた。つまり，世襲制に対して才能に応じて人材を抜擢せよとの考え方である。この思想を最も強く主張するのは《墨子》と《公羊伝（くようでん）》である。《墨子》は主に兄弟･父子･君長の兼愛を説くが，これは世襲制，氏族制からの弱者の解放を根底としている。同じ基盤から庶民･奴隷にも才能に応じて官吏登用の門戸が開かれるべきとの主張がでてくるのである。
