Born: May 29, 1897 in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port Died September 28, 1955. A French priest from Tokyo. He came to Japan in 1925 as a member of the Catholic Paris Foreign Missions Society. As the first principal of the Catholic Seminary, he trained Japanese priests. He served in the army during World War II and was seriously injured. He returned to Japan in 1948 and taught at the Institute of French-Japanese Studies and the University of the Sacred Heart. He gave many lectures in fluent and fluent Japanese and left behind many excellent Japanese writings. He also founded the "Banseikai" (Evening Study Group) and deepened his interactions with non-Christian intellectuals. His major works include "Travels of Thought" (1952) and "Eternal Masterpieces" (55). His pen names were Kando and Karita Sumi.
