The Ogasawara Islands are in the subtropics and have never been connected to the continent. As a result, the plants and animals that inhabit them have continued to differentiate into unique species, resulting in many species that are endemic to the Ogasawara Islands.

There are about 400 species of higher plants, of which 204 are endemic, including the Japanese laurel tree, the Japanese cherry, and the sandalwood.
