Kannukijin - God of the Trees

...The eight characters "Enri Edo (Despise the Impure World) / Gongu Jyodo (Rejoice in the Pure Land)" that saved Ieyasu from suicide became his motto and also his battle flag. The wooden pole that saved him is revered as "Kannukijin" and is one of the temple's treasures. Tokugawa Iemitsu built the main gate in 1638 (Kan'ei 15), and in 1641 spent three years rebuilding the various buildings, but in 1855 (Ansei 2) a fire destroyed everything except isolated buildings such as the pagoda, mountain gate, and bell tower, and they were rebuilt in 1857. ...
