A signal generator is a device used as a signal source to evaluate the input/output characteristics of electronic elements, circuits, equipment, systems, etc. In the narrow sense, it refers to a standard signal generator used to measure the frequency characteristics of high-frequency equipment such as receivers. In a broader sense, it also includes general-purpose oscillators, sweep signal generators, function generators, frequency synthesizers, noise generators, pulse generators, etc. Standard signal generators are based on oscillator circuits such as capacitors and resistors, inductors and capacitors, and crystals, and are capable of amplifying, modulating, and attenuating signals.

電子素子，回路，機器，システムなどの入出力特性を評価するための信号源として用いられるものを信号発生器という。狭義には受信機など高周波機器の周波数特性の測定に用いられる標準信号発生器を指す。広義にはこのほか，一般用発振器，掃引信号発生器，関数発生器，周波数シンセサイザー，雑音発生器，パルス発生器などを含む。　標準信号発生器はコンデンサーと抵抗，インダクタンスとコンデンサー，水晶などの発振回路を基として，信号の増幅，変調，減衰が可能なものである。
