A railroad that crosses a continent and connects both coasts. It was generally built as a pioneer railroad, but was also important for its political and military significance as well as economic development. It contributed greatly to the development of the interior of the continent in the second half of the 19th century, and was important in terms of strengthening freight transport between areas far from the coastline and seaports, and functionally integrating the railway network within the continent. Examples include the transcontinental railroads in the United States and Canada (Union Pacific Railroad, Southern Pacific Railroad, Canadian Pacific Railroad, etc.), the Trans-Siberian Railway, and the East-West Transcontinental Railroad in Australia.
