A canal that connected the southwestern bank of Lake Hinuma in central Ibaraki Prefecture to the Tomoe River flowing into Kitaura. It was built in 1707-1709 by Matsunami Kanjuro, a samurai of the Mito Domain, to open an inland waterway from the mouth of the Nakagawa River to Lake Hinuma, Kitaura, the Tone River, Edo River, and Edo. It was a canal stretching about 8 km southwest from the southwestern bank of Lake Hinuma, passing through the Ebisawa River bank of the Tomoe River, to Momiji, Tomoe Village, but it was not used much because it was higher than the water level of the Tomoe River. The remains of the canal now remain as rice fields. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
