Novatianus (English spelling)

A Roman Christian theologian (c. ?-258). He was the pioneer of the Novatian school, a large-scale sectarian movement in the early Western Church. He converted from Stoicism, was baptized as a Christian, and became a priest. He was known as a brilliant theologian and thinker, and his major work, On the Trinity, is considered to be the first important theological work written in Latin. During the Decius persecution (249-250), Novatian was intransigent and strict in his refusal to allow believers who had betrayed the Church to return to the Church after the persecution, and he came into conflict with the moderate Bishop of Rome, Cornelius (elected in 251).

ローマのキリスト教神学者。初期の西方教会における大規模な分派運動であるノウァティアヌス派の先駆けとなった。ストア派から転向してキリスト教の洗礼を受け，司祭となる。すぐれた神学者，思想家として知られ，主著《三位一体論》は，ラテン語で書かれた最初の重要な神学的著作とされる。デキウス帝の大迫害(249‐250)において，教会を裏切った信徒の迫害後の教会復帰を認めるか否かの問題で，ノウァティアヌスは非妥協，厳格主義の立場からそれを認めず，穏健派のローマ司教コルネリウスCornelius(251選出)と対立した。
