German painter and printmaker, also involved in sculpture and architecture. Born in Tettenweiss, he died in Tetten, Bohemia. He initially pursued a course to become an art teacher, but in 1885 studied at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts, where he settled and continued to create. He was inspired by Böcklin and Lenbach, and produced religious paintings, allegorical paintings based on mythology, and portraits. He valued craft forms as well as pastoral and lyrical content, and was close to the fin de siècle Jugendstil (Jugend style). From 1895 he was a professor at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts, and had Kandinsky, Klee and others as his students.
