A freshwater fish of the Cyprinidae family (illustration). In Osaka, this species is called Ketabasu and the Oikawa is called Hasu. Its native habitat was limited to Lake Biwa, Lake Mikata in Fukui Prefecture, and the Hasu River that flows into these lakes, but it was transferred to various parts of the country along with the small ayu of Lake Biwa and released into the sea, and is now breeding in the Kanto region and other areas. It swims actively on the surface of clear lakes and rivers and jumps on the water surface. It feeds on small fish and insects, and in Lake Biwa it prefers to prey on small ayu. It is shaped like the Oikawa, but has a large mouth and both jaws bent in a "H" shape. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
