Frank Sinatra

American pop singer and film actor. Born in New Jersey. His father was an Italian immigrant. In 1933, he heard Bing Crosby perform live and decided to become a singer. He began singing professionally in 1935. In 1939, he joined the Harry James Orchestra, the following year he moved to the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, and in 1942 he went independent. His unique, sweet singing voice made him an idol for bobby-soxers (schoolgirls). From the end of the 1940s, he was in a slump due to fatigue and problems in his personal life, and his popularity temporarily declined, but in the 1950s he established his own new style and became a great singer representing America in both name and reality, influencing many singers. He began appearing in films from 1941, and has appeared in many works, mainly musicals, but after winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for From Here to Eternity in 1953, he also became active as a star actor. In 1961, he founded Reprise Records. In 1969, his song My Way was a big hit. He announced his retirement in the spring of 1971, but returned in the fall of 1973. He continued singing until 1995, demonstrating the skills and dignity that earned him the nickname "emperor of the entertainment world." Since his first visit to Japan in 1960, he visited the country six times until 1994.

アメリカのポピュラー歌手、映画俳優。ニュー・ジャージー州生まれ。父はイタリア移民。1933年ビング・クロスビーの実演を聞いて歌手を志し、35年にプロとして歌い出した。39年ハリー・ジェームズ楽団に参加、翌年トミー・ドーシー楽団に移り、42年に独立。独特の甘美な歌唱でボビー・ソクサー（女学生）のアイドルとして圧倒的な人気を得た。40年代末からは疲労と私生活の問題から不調になり一時人気も下降したが、50年代に入って自身の新しいスタイルを確立、名実ともにアメリカを代表する大歌手となり、多くの歌手に影響を及ぼした。映画出演は41年からで、ミュージカルを中心に数多くの作品があるが、53年の『地上(ここ)より永遠(とわ)に』でアカデミー助演男優賞を受賞してからは、演技派スターとしても活躍。61年にリプリーズ・レコード会社を設立した。69年には、『マイ・ウェイ』が大ヒットした。71年春に引退を表明したが73年秋に復帰。95年まで歌い、芸能界の帝王とよばれる実力と貫禄(かんろく)を示し続けた。1960年の初来日以来、94年まで日本訪問は6回を数えた。
